Following the (distressing) departure announcement the state of play at the bookies was given at Outpost Gallifrey. Four of those one the list were in Paul Abbott’s State of Play. I think Simm is unlikely. McAvoy would be great I think, but there’s no way he’d do it. Morrisey I’m not excited about in the role… somehow he’s to… straight. Nighy would have made a fantastic Ninth, but I’m not sure he’d fit now.
When the Doctor returned just over three years ago, I’d hoped David Tennant would be cast, and when Christopher Eccleston left I was excited about the direction he’d take the show. I don’t think I was wrong. Somehow when I’m rewatching previous incumbents I can fully imagine that Tennant is the same person as each of them (even Hartnell!) That’s a remarkable accomplishment, especially as he has made his own Doctor so distinctive.
There’s no one I feel that excitement about now. I’m starting to hope it is Dervla Kirwan, for real. I’m also sorry there won’t be more continuity from Davies to Moffatt. Evolution rather than revolution helps you believe the Doctor is still the same man.
Therefore the ideal scenario, in my opinion, would be if they delayed the casting of eleven and had McGann return for a season of “flashback” episodes as Eight.
Or “Bond Songs Are Forever” or “Unlicensed to Sing” or “Sing Another Day” or, as the Guardian puts it in their round up: For Your Ears Only. Because the answer is they go to Youtube where, released as B-sides or discovered in the vaults, they are then married up with the original title sequences by the fans – which is fairly weird with For Your Eyes Only where (uniquely) Sheena Easton actually appears to be miming (badly) to Blondie’s title song.
You may well be familiar with Dione Warwick’s Mr Kiss Kiss Bang Bang or Julie Rogers You Only Live Twice but there are many more out there of which the Guardian links to only a few. These include Johnny Cash, The Pet Shop Boys and Saint Ettienne, but, alas, not Vic Flick and Eric Clapton which sounds awesome. Most of the songs here are pretty awful, though a couple are better than the official ones largely because the official ones are even worse…
Their link to Ace of Base’s Goldeneye doesn’t have the film’s titles so here’s a better link.
David Tennant has announced that he is vacating the Tardis and leaving the BBC’s Doctor Who series at the end of next year.
Tennant’s decision brings to an end his popular four-year tenure as the time lord.
The BBC confirmed that the Scottish actor will complete the filming of four special episodes to be screened this year and in early 2010, as well as 2009’s Christmas special.
More details soon …
I can’t work out if this means he’s doing any of season 31 or not. I assumed he would leave at the end of the season (best case scenario) but we knew he’d stay for the specials. Without the detail, there’s no story here?
Update: Sadly, it is confirmed. I think it would have been wonderful continuity, not to mention great to have more Tennant, if he’d stayed for another season.
One of the things the iPhone has got a lot of stick for is the camera. It stayed at 2MP when the 3G version came out. I didn’t think that would be a problem; actually because it’s always with me I’ve used it a few times and the picture quality (not the resolution) bugs me. Review said it had good quality for a phone camera, that’s as maybe, but phone cameras are awful. Plus it does weird stuff like this (it is, I have discovered, a known issue) which makes me wonder how this camera actually works.
And this.
If Apple were to make it work with video, however, all will be forgiven.
Something of a triumph: two weeks in and they’re not dead. There are some flies in there though; apparently that’s avoidable by putting a layer of paper or soil over the food.
In just under three weeks Dufftown, a model narrow gauge railway 4mm scale will be exhibited in Brighton. It’s a layout I’ve designed and help build, and it’s not nearly ready, so I thought it would be fun to record the last few weeks of the race against time on a blog. So I will.
As part of one of my courses I will be assessed on a personal journal. “I recommend you set up a blog” said the lecturer “for your reflections (and rants)”. So I have. Please wander over (if you feel so inclined) and have a look.

I first encountered one when presented with pomme de terre en deux colours with a delicious lunch served in the square in front of an excellent restaurant in Vence. Now I’m happy to find they’re a regular feature of the Lewes Farmers’ Market.
